Child Sponsorship
ProSorata is committed to building partnerships between children in the community and ProSorata donors.
The goal of this partnership is to help to create caring, individual relationships between young people of Sorata and people interested in their well being. To this end, we match up one child from Sorata with one sponsor. The sponsor is considered a godparent of sorts, a madrina or padrino.
This partnership involves a contribution of $100.00 or 800 Bolivianos per year. This money helps very poor children to meet some of their most basic needs. The money goes toward:
- school supplies
- school uniforms
- shoes
- healthy food
- common medical needs
- blankets
- hygienic supplies.
The god parent receives a photo of the child, a letter of introduction from the child and information about the child and his or her family.
ProSorata volunteers meet with each child and family every month to determine what the child may need the most for that month. The ProSorata volunteer then either purchases what the child needs (clothes, new shoes, powdered milk etc…) or gives the family the money to purchase it themselves. When families purchase items themselves, they bring the items to the ProSorata volunteer to show how the money was used and to take pictures for the godparent. Children also receive 50 Bolivianos for their birthday and Christmas to spend as they like.
The children and sponsors are able to write to one another, and Bolivian, U.S. and European based sponsors have traveled to Bolivia to meet the children. This helps to foster and create a sense of community, friendship and concern among donors and participants. Please feel free to visit us in Sorata any time!
